The BROCK DUMP is owned and operated by Durham Region (since 1974). It is built on an old gravel pit site, and located on a floodplain that contains an environmentally sensitive wetland.
The dump has NO LINER (natural or otherwise) and is leaching fluids into neighbouring properties and water sources. There is a tributary of the Pefferlaw Brook running through the dump property which is a possible source of pollution to LAKE SIMCOE.
INSPECTION & TESTING - yearly (groundwater and surface water) by a consulting group under contract to the Region. Last inspection report available is for the year 2005, where results identified a plume of potential toxins leaking to the north and east.
The dump is available to receive garbage from any jurisdiction should the MOE (Ministry of Environment) decide that there is an emergency.
The MOE Certificate of Approval has NO GEOGRAPHIC RESTRICTIONS. The dump is on the contingency list of Durham Region to be used to deposit ALL of Durham's waste should the border close to GTA garbage! |
